Part art, part social initiative:

The Community Movement Project is a series of choreographed movement pieces.

The pieces are bespoke, inspired by the motivations and activities of each unique community.

The project is ongoing, growing with each new community it serves.

Artist, Hannah Dancing works with communities to create specialized movement pieces (kind of like group dance routines) which reflect each group’s goals and practices. She aims to take as little as possible, and give as much as possible to the communities she engages with.

Through conversations with community members and/or observing the group’s activities she grows to better understand them and find inspiration for the choreography.

The choreography is a series of simple movements, such as expanding and retracting one’s arms, with all members participating in a symmetrical pattern, such as a circle. Viewed from above, the synchronized movements of the group resemble a kaleidoscope.

The movements are based on the ideologies and activities of each community.

In a single-session workshop, Hannah will teach the movements to all members of the community who would like to participate. When practice leads to a reasonably cohesive routine, the piece will be filmed for the group to see. Members of the community who are not drawn to the movement part of the project will be welcomed to participate in other ways.

With permission from the group, Hannah will share the finished piece with the general public as part of the Community Movement Project series.
